Obituary

Hallowell- Ellen Jeanette Beals, 84, passed on the evening of Thursday, March 19, 2026, at the Augusta Center for Health and Rehabilitation following an extended battle with Parkinsons Disease, with her daughter at her bedside. Ellen was born in Bath, ME on December 9, 1941, the only daughter of the late Edwin F. and Jeanette F. (Dowling) Oliver. She attended local schools and graduated from Morse High School in the Class of 1959 Ellen married her high school sweetheart, Donald E. Day and together they made their home and started their business in Eliott, ME. They co-owned and operated a small manufacturing business in Southern Maine, Northern Cabana, building additions to mobile homes. They operated the business for 25 years. A few years following Donald’s death in 1994, Ellen married Peter Beals of Rye Beach, NH. They settled into Central Maine to enjoy their retirement years. Peter taught my mother how to let go and live free of the daily grind. Before his retirement, Peter made his living navigating boats along the Intracoastal Waterway from Boston to the Florida Keys. Together they made two complete trips along the ICW before Peter’s death in 2004; mom had never felt freer and content. Following Peter’s death, Ellen dove into volunteer work within her community. Her volunteer service included working at the reception desk at Maine General Hospital in Augusta and Hospice in the Augusta area. Her hobbies included reading, nature walks and hikes and crafts. Ellen had a natural, God given talent for hand crafts. She could pick up any craft and master it within days. She was also a member of Penny Memorial Church in Augusta, ME. Ellen was predeceased by her first husband, Donald E. Day in 1994 and her second husband Peter Beals in 2004. She is survived and dearly missed by her daughter, Tammy A. Day of Farmingdale. A Memorial Service will be held on April 10, 2026 at 1:00pm at Penney Memorial Baptist Church, 393 Water Street, Augusta, ME. Arrangements and guidance are under the direction of Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home and Cremation Care, 1 Church Street, Augusta, ME.
