MANCHESTER -- Ellen Theresa 'Tiny' McKenney, 90, died Sunday, Aug. 28, 2011, at Heritage Rehabilitation and Living Center in Winthrop. She was born in Portland on Jan. 5, 1921, the daughter of Clementine Theresa Breen. She graduated from Newburyport High School in Newburyport, Mass., before finding employment with Hazzard Shoe. After 14 years with Hazzard Shoe, Tiny began working for the State of Maine in the Department of Motor Vehicles, where she remained for more than 39 years until her retirement. Tiny's many interests included solving 'search a word' puzzles, playing cards, and enjoying yard sales of her own as well as frequenting others. Knitting was also high on her list of things she enjoyed. In one year, she knitted an amazing 200 pair of mittens which she generously donated to families in need in the central Maine area. Aside from her family, however, her biggest loves were playing bingo, which she did practically on a daily basis, and sweet stuff, which she loved to bake, but for the last few years she mostly enjoyed tasting. Tiny was predeceased by her husband, Harry McKenney, and a half-sister, Alice Christmas. She is survived by her two sons, Percy Lyon and his wife, Patty, of Goose Creek, S.C., and Michael McKenney and his partner, Diane Lewis, of Manchester; two half-sisters, Mary Piper of Augusta and Kathleen Mattson of Rockport, Mass.; three grandchildren, Lisa Newlin of Hunterville, N.C., David Lyon and his wife, Sharon, of Summerville, S.C., and Tara McKenney of Winthrop; and two great-granddaughters, Gracyn and Jadyn Lyon. Relatives and friends are invited to visit from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 31, at Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin St., Winthrop. A celebration of Ellen's life will be held graveside at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 1, at the East Readfield Cemetery, Route 17, Readfield.
