FARMINGDALE- Ernest (Ernie) L. Haskell, 93, passed away on July 3, 2023, after a brief illness. He was born on September 15, 1929, in Augusta, Maine to the late Cecil and Anna B. (Black) Haskell. Ernie met the love of his life, Eunice M. Ladner on their High School Senior trip in Washington D.C. in 1947. They were married on June 7, 1952.
Ernest graduated from Cony High School in 1947. He had many jobs along the way: He unloaded freight at the local train station, drove a taxi, worked in the family business Haskell's Moving and Transfer and later started a commuter bus service, D & H Bus Lines for Augusta/Gardiner/Togus. In 1956 Ernie began selling Hudson automobiles in Hallowell, ME under the name D & H Motors for a brief time before moving to Gardiner to sell International truck and Lincoln-Mercury products. He lead D & H Motors successfully for 67 years.
Ernie was very involved in his community while also serving in the National Guard Reserves as a cook for 19 years. Ernie was a Brother of the Bethleham Masonic Lodge in Augusta for 72 years and member for the Gardiner Lion's Club for 60 years, holding many offices including past president. He was a member of Maine Automobile Dealers Association including a Trustee of the Insurance Trust and Chairman of the Board of Trustees. He was also one of the original founders of Dirago Bank and Trust in Augusta and Kennebec Ice Arena in Hallowell.
Ernie deeply enjoyed the time he spent with family going on many trips in the U.S., Caribbean, and Europe. He provided the opportunity for his family to spend summers in Pemaquid and later, a camp on Damariscotta Lake for over 50 years. Great fun was had by all with boating, waterskiing, Badminton and Horseshoes. Back at home, he loved to play pool while having great conversations with family and friends. He enjoyed carpentry including building his own home in Farmingdale. He later learned to install vinyl and aluminum siding.
He is survived by his two sons, Brent Haskell of Jefferson, Randall Haskell and wife Linda of Manchester, his brother Albert Haskell and his wife Linda of West Gardiner, several cousins, nieces and nephews along with his grand dog Katie whom he loved very much.
In addition to his mother, father and loving wife Eunice, Ernest is predeceased by brothers Lendall, Warner and Arnold Haskell.
A graveside service was held on July 20, 2023 at Oak Grove Cemetery in Gardiner.
