Augusta - Ethel R. (Johnson) Graham, born November 20, 1915 died in Augusta on July 31, 2007 following a long illness. She was one of 12 children. Ethel grew up on a farm in Round Pond, Maine where her father was a lobsterman. After graduating from the one-room stone schoolhouse in Round Pond, she moved to Boston where she met her husband of 58 years. Together they raised 5 children and lived in Somerville and Wilmington, Massachusetts; Kailua, Hawaii; Tokyo, Japan; Okinawa; Clearwater, Florida and Manchester, Maine. Ethel will be remembered for her apple pies, her prolific vegetable and flower gardens and her avid reading. She loved children, the Red Sox and even developed a recent interest in NASCAR racing. She was quiet and gentle and left this world in the same way she lived. Ethel was predeceased by her husband Ernest MacDonald Graham in 1996, her daughter Judith Nille in 1994, and her grandson Philip Vatcher in 1985. She is survived by her son Charles Graham of Honolulu, Hawaii, her daughters; Roberta Leighton of Bangor, Joan Sanborn of Taunton, Massachusetts and Diane Williams of Manchester as well as many grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren. There will be no visiting hours. A Catholic Funeral Service will be held 10:00am Friday August 3 at Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home, One Church St., Augusta. Burial will follow in the Manchester Forks Cemetery, Manchester. The family extends its deep gratitude to the staff at Gray Birch residential care and skilled nursing for caring for their Mother and Grandmother as though she was their own.
