DAMARISCOTTA - Ethel L. Patterson, 82, died Friday, March 6, 2009, at Cove's Edge Nursing Facility. She was born in Lancaster, Pa., on Dec. 18, 1926, the daughter of Arthur and Sarah (Bartholemew) Witham. Ethel graduated from Colerain Township High School in Kirkwood, Pa., in 1945. She entered Frankford School of Nursing in Philadelphia and graduated in June 1949 as a registered nurse. On July 9, 1949, she married Horace Monroe Patterson and, in 1950, gave birth to their son, Robert Wayne Patterson. She worked at Point Pleasant Hospital for 10 years and later became head nurse at Fitkin Memorial Hospital (Jersey Shore Hospital), where she worked for 15 years until her retirement in 1962. She was predeceased by her husband, Horace Patterson, in 1998. She is survived by a son, Robert Wayne Patterson and his wife, Gay (Osborn) Patterson, of Augusta; a grandson, Adam Monroe Patterson and his wife, Mary (Grady) Patterson, of Augusta; a granddaughter, Gabrielle Patterson Krol and her husband, Scott Krol, of Toms River, N.J.; two grandchildren, Allison and Jared; and a brother, Charles Witmer and his wife, Mary, of Quarryville, Pa.; also several nieces and nephews. There will be no visiting hours. A celebration of Ethel's life will take place at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 11, at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, 60 Bangor St., Augusta, with the Rev. Bruce Alexander officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, Wrightstown, N.J.
