AUGUSTA ? Eva Mildred (Smith) Williams, 82, of St. Mark's Home, 57 Winthrop St., Augusta, died Thursday, July 11, 2002, at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta. She was born in Somerville, Massachusetts, Dec. 11, 1919, the daughter of Fred and Lillian (Toothaker) Smith. She grew up in Gardiner with three brothers, Irving, Richard and Frank Smith. After graduating from Gardiner High School in 1937, Eva worked for Central Maine Power Co. prior to her marriage to Robert W. Williams on June 17, 1950. Eva and Bob lived in Winthrop for 20 years and raised four children before moving to Cumberland Foreside in 1971. Eva was treasurer of Winthrop Congregational Church and a longtime volunteer with Maine Medical Center of Portland and Hospice of Maine. She was an avid seamstress, knitter, rug braider, furniture refinisher and gardener. Eva will be remembered for her sense of humor, service to church and community, and devotion to her family. Eva is survived by her children, Chester Williams and his wife, Ann, of Lexington, Massachusetts, Robert Williams and his wife, Diane, of Manchester, Maine, Pamela Nelson of Seattle, Washington, and Cheryl Mellis and her husband, David, of Springfield, Massachusetts. She was blessed with 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Frank Smith of Gardiner, three sisters-in-law, cousins, nieces and nephews. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 3, at Winthrop Congregational Church in Winthrop, with the Rev. Kim Murphy officiating. Burial will be at Mount Auburn Cemetery in Auburn. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to St. Mark's Home, 57 Winthrop St., Augusta 04330.
