VASSALBORO - Fern E. Hawes, 89, of North Belfast Avenue, died Saturday, July 24, 2010, at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation and Nursing Care at Glenridge. She was born in Augusta on May 22, 1921, the daughter of George and Mattie (Merrill) Doe. Fern attended Windsor area schools and Erskine Academy. She was a homemaker for most of her life who enjoyed cooking, beano, cards and playing search a word games. She was predeceased by her husband Arthur B. Hawes in 1973. She is survived by a daughter, Joanne Jones of Vassalboro; her sons Arthur E. Hawes and his wife Margaret of Winthrop, William F. Hawes of Chelsea, Richard W. Hawes of Winthrop and Glen E. Hawes and his wife, Bevley, of North Monmouth; five grandchildren, Angela Elliott, Troy Heath, Mitzi Brown, Larry Hawes and Ann Elliott; seven great-grandchildren Dylan, Natasha, Roseann, Scott, Curtis, Cody and Tina. There will be no visiting hours. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 28, at Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home, One Church St., Augusta.
