FAYETTE- Fred E. Sweeney, age 75, passed away suddenly at his home in Fayette, on Friday, June 14, 2024, with his wife, Patty Sweeney, at his side. Fred was born in Brockton, Massachusetts, on October 10, 1948, to Fredrick and Kathryn Sweeney. He attended Whitman Hanson Regional School, before following in his father's footsteps as a truck driver.
Fred was hired by Bourne Transportation Company, and began his lifelong journey as a member of the teamsters Union. (Local #653) Being a member of the teamsters was something that Fred held dear to his heart, and encompassed a large part of his identity. Their mission and everything they stood for was a driving force throughout Fred's entire career.
After driving for 11 years, he chose to sign with Carolina Freight Company. It was there that Fred made countless friends. He was able to assist his peers in every and all situations. Making a name for himself as a man to be trusted and relied upon in the transportation industry. When Carolina Freight Company was bought out by Arkansas Best Freight (ABF) in 1995, he continued his position there as both a truck driver, a union steward and also a member of the executive board. Fred eventually retired from the teamsters in December 2015.
When Fred was not maneuvering a truck out of the back alleys of Boston, he had many other hobbies; You could find him mostly outdoors. He was an avid shell-fisherman with a knack for finding the best spots to dig quahogs. You could often find him on Duxbury Beach with his rake and a basket. He used his long trusted knife to shuck a quahog and eat it, just to test it out. Finding a talent for cooking after his retirement, you could catch him on his back porch shucking quahogs to be used fresh, in a world famous, "White Special".
Fred was an avid hunter traveling throughout New England and New York with his best friend, Jimmy. He found the perfect deer to bring home, feeding himself and those he loved for many seasons to come. Because, let's face it ....he was an excellent shot. Fred was a lifelong hockey lover. He enjoyed dining out with his wife, and going to the Providence and Boston Bruins games. Fred loved spending time with his grandchildren, always encouraging them to pursue a good education.
Fred is survived by his loving wife of 19 years, Patty Sweeney. He leaves behind his three children: Brenda Forth (husband Mike), Jackie Pierce (husband Jon), Patrick Sweeney (wife Maureen). Survived, and loved by Hayley Flewelling Brandijo Kervin and Amanda Taylor. He leaves behind five grandchildren: Katherine, Bridget, Anna, Connor, and Emma.
Survived, and loved by MaKayla, Logan, Madalyn, and Avah. Fred will be deeply missed, and his memory will be cherished by those who knew and loved him.
