Obituary

AUGUSTA - Fred Everett Williams, 99, died Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008, at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation and Nursing Care, Graybirch Drive, Augusta. He was born in Mount Vernon on Feb. 7, 1909, the son of Henry and Hazel (Luce) Williams. In 1930, Everett married Alice Hope Springer and for a short while they farmed. He worked as a laborer for the Town of Mount Vernon before becoming road commissioner, serving for 22 years before retiring. He also worked for 17 years as a foreman for the state Department of Transportation, building roads throughout the state. He was a member of the Vernon Valley Masonic Lodge 99 AF & AM and the Vernon Valley Chapter 68 Order of Eastern Star. Everett took great pride in his vegetable garden. He was known to have a great sense of humor, was a kind, honest and faithful man, and always treated people fairly. He was predeceased by his wife, Hope Williams, in 1997 and a daughter, Lucille Guzman, in 1996. He is survived by a son-in-law, Juan Guzman and his wife Kathleen of Oakland; a granddaughter, Rose Hale and her husband Douglas of Augusta; grandson, Jerry Guzman and his wife Stacie of Augusta; great grandchildren, Scott Hale, Richard Hale, Melanie Guzman and Katherine Guzman; two half-sisters, Frances York and her husband Fred of Maryland and Christine Wunder and her husband Wesley of Florida. Visiting hours will be held Tuesday, Sept. 9, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin St., Winthrop, where a Masonic service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m., followed by a celebration of Everett's life. The Rev. Phil Watkins will officiate. Burial will be in the Robinson Cemetery, Mount Vernon.
