EAST WINTHROP ?Frederick E. Allen, 73, of East Winthrop, died Tuesday, June 18, 2002, at his home. He was born in Pittston, July 4, 1928, the son of Robert and Mildred (Brown) Allen. He grew up in the Pittston area and attended schools in Pittston and Gardiner. Fred served his country in the Army during the Korean War, attaining the rank of sergeant. After the war, he married Josephine Preshong on Aug. 12, 1955. Together they operated the Sunoco station on Main Street in Winthrop. Then they ran Allen's Diner and most recently, Fred worked at the Winthrop Transfer Station. He enjoyed all the treasures that were other people's trash. Fred was a long-time member of the Winthrop Fire Department, serving more than 30 years. Mr. Allen was predeceased by his wife, Josephine; his parents; two brothers, Robert Allen and Kenny Allen; and his grandmother, Mildred Allen. He is survived by a son, Robert Allen and his companion, Martha MacAllister; two daughters, Donna Brochu and her husband, Paul, of Hallowell, and Cindy White and her husband, Roger, of Belgrade; his brothers, Wilfred Allen of Lewiston, Stephen Allen of Manchester, Mayland Proctor of Chelsea and Calvin Allen of Kentucky; his sisters, Charlotte MacPhelemy of Farmingdale, Vicki Grenier of Augusta, Sharon Dulac of Augusta, June Bruce of Brunswick and Beryl Hasson of Alna; six grandchildren, Allen and Melissa Brochu, Cathy Lucas, Jacob and Douglas White, and Robert Allen, Jr.; five great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Relatives and friends may visit 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday, June 20, at Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin St., Winthrop. A funeral committal service will be held at 9 a.m. Friday at the Father LeClair Chapel of the Maine Veterans' Memorial Cemetery. Burial will follow at the Veterans Cemetery.
