READFIELD- George W. Allen, 84, passed away peacefully on July 9, 2023 with his family by his side. He was born to William and Elizabeth (Leighton/Richards) Allen on August 20, 1938 in Readfield. George attended Readfield Primary and Cony High Schools. In 1957 he enlisted in the Air Force and spent time in Texas, Nebraska and Greenland. When he left the Air Force, he returned to Readfield and went to work for Livermore Shoe. There, he met the woman who would become his wife, Claire Hunt. They married and moved to Peru. Soon a daughter Kathie and a son Bill were born. In 1968, George moved his family to Readfield to live in the family homestead. After moving he went to work for Mammoth Mart and welcomed another daughter, Deanna. He would go on to work for King's Department Store and Saunders Manufacturing where he retired in 2011. In his free time, George enjoyed tinkering on his Model-A, kayaking, playing rummy and driving his convertible with the top down. George is predeceased by his parents, wife, sister, Anne Allen and daughter, Deanna. George is survived by his daughter Kathie, her husband Mark Adams, his son Bill, his wife Martha, his granddaughters Becky Duca, her husband Kyle, Abigail Adams, her partner Danny, Erica Adams, her partner Sam, and Emily Allen. His great-granddaughters Rosie and Lilly Duca. His family would like to thank all of his neighbors who were there for him over the years, the staff at The Captain Lewis Residence who took wonderful care of him when his son and daughter no longer could, and Beacon Hospice for supporting the family through George's final stage of life. George's graveside service will be held on Saturday July 29th at 3PM at the Readfield Corner Cemetery on Church Road in Readfield. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to PALS No-Kill Cat Shelter in Winthrop Maine where he adopted his companions Tim and Jill.
