WAYNE ? George James Place Jr. died Thursday, March 13, 2003, at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston. He was born in Swampscott, Mass., April 24, 1924, the son of George and Anna (Lowe) Place. George was a pilot, flying P38s during World War II. He was a flight instructor in Beverly, Mass., and a commercial pilot for Northeast and Delta Airlines, retiring in 1984. George was also active in the Wayne Volunteer Fire Department. George was particularly fond of teaching computer skills to the children of Wayne Elementary School and enjoyed giving water-skiing lessons at the Androscoggin Yacht Club. George is survived by his wife, Rosemary Rees; his sister, Barbara Doane of Massachusetts; daughter, Carolanne 'Muffy' Ireland and her husband, John, of Wayne; son, Donald Place and his wife, Susan, of Minnesota; son, Dr. James Place and his wife, Cindy, of Turner; grandson, Maj. Christopher Ireland, his wife, Vickie, and daughters, Meghan and Hannah, of England; grandson, Jeffrey Ireland, wife, Traci, and children, Connor and Laura, of Wayne; granddaughter, Emily Weir and her husband, Chad, of Minnesota; granddaughter, Sarah Place of Minnesota; and grandsons, Nick and Jordan Place of Portland. Memorial contributions may be sent to the Wayne Fire Department, Wayne 04284. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 16, at the Wayne Community Church.
