READFIELD - George S. Newland, Jr., 76, died on Sunday, July 29, 2007 at Maine Medical Center in Portland. He was born in South Bound Brook, New Jersey on October 22, 1930, the son of the late George S. Newland Sr. and Margaret (Teryak) Newland. George graduated from Bound Brook High School in Bound Brook. Following graduation, he enlisted in the United States Air Force where he served 1948-1951, achieving the rank of Sergeant. He married Marion Bernhardt in Martinsville, NJ on June 26th, 1954 and in 1956 they moved to Maine. George was a member of the American Legion Post #2 in Augusta as well as clubs which included the Sportsman?s Alliance of Maine, National Rifle Association and the Saco River Salmon Club. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, and flying. George is survived by his wife of 53 years, Marion Newland, of Readfield; his sister, Jean Sibilia and brother-in-law, Nick Sibilia; three nieces, Janice Reppond & her husband, Phil, Sandy Sherry & her husband, David, and Michelle Sibilia; and two nephews, Mark Sibilia and Michael Tronziger & his wife, Brenda. Relatives and friends are invited to visit from 6:00 ? 9:00pm on Wednesday, August 1st at Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin St., Winthrop. A celebration of George?s life will be held at the funeral home at 11:00am on Thursday. Following will be a committal service with military honors in Readfield Corner Cemetery on the Church Road in Readfield. In lieu of flowers, contributions in George?s memory may be made to the Readfield Fire Dept., c/o Readfield Town Office, 8 Old Kents Hill Road, Readfield, ME 04355 or to the charity of one?s choice.
