AUGUSTA - George Alfred McKinnon, 90, of Augusta, died Monday, Feb. 14, 2005, at Maine Veterans' Home in Augusta. He was born in Lowell, Mass., on Dec. 20, 1914, the son of Luc Valmore and Maria Bella (Fortin) McKinnon. George was drafted into the Army after the outbreak of World War II and served for the duration of the war, including duty in North Africa and Europe. After the war ended, he left the Army and returned to Massachusetts to join his wife, June. He worked briefly for the U.S. Post Office at South Station in Boston before he and his wife, June, and their daughter, Loretta, settled in Gardiner in 1946. It was there that he began his career with the Veterans Administration Hospital in Togus, from which he retired in 1972. Prior to his brief stay at Maine Veterans' Home, he lived 31/2 years at the Alzheimer's Care Facility in Gardiner, where he received excellent and loving care. He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, June (Small) McKinnon of Augusta; three sons, Richard of York, Arthur and his wife, Lee, of Lutz, Fla., and Robert of Caribou; two daughters, Loretta Giandrea and her husband, Raymond Sr., of Winthrop, and Mary Jane Hafez and her husband, Samuel, of Nottingham, N.H.; seven grandchildren, Raymond Giandrea Jr. of North Yarmouth, Michael Giandrea of Gaithersburg, Md., Christina McKinnon of Lutz, Steven McKinnon of Hillsboro, Ore., Alexander and Natalie Hafez of Nottingham, and Robert McKinnon Jr. of Gardiner; and four great-grandchildren, Nicolas, Olivia and Joseph Giandrea of North Yarmouth, and David Giandrea of Gaithersburg. A private family committal service will be held at the new Maine Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mr. McKinnon's memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Care Unit, 150 Dresden Ave., Gardiner 04345.
