George Donald Taylor, Don passed at the Togus Springs Hospice Unit, Veterans Hospital, Togus Maine on 07/21/2026. He was able to be at the VA when he passed the same building where he had volunteered. Thanks to all the staff, the nurses there are truly special.

He was sweet, kind and a true Maine Guide. He loved the Maine outdoors and teaching people all about our State. He volunteered for many years with his wife Nancy Taylor at the VA in Augusta teaching veterans how to make fly rods, tie flies and taking them fishing. He especially enjoyed teaching youth at the Maine Trout Unlimited Trout Camp, cancer survivors with Casting for Recovery, rod building and fly tying. There were always people, many veterans, in and out of their house teaching them to build things. He always, always had a story about fishing. He was a guy who drilled a hole in his kitchen floor to access a dip tank in the basement for making bamboo fly rods. Even on his last days, he enjoyed hearing how his great grandson caught his first fish.

Don touched so many lives and through the teachings he passed to them.

He was born on 03/01/1938, in Lewiston Maine, Son of Owen M. Taylor and Hazel M. Taylor. He grew up in Hallowell, then Winthrop attending Kents Hill High School. After high school at Kents Hill, he attended Norwich University, graduating then joined the U.S. Army as 1st Lieutenant company commander of artillery battalions. Don’s first civilian job was as Co-Owner of Own Taylor & Son Construction, Winthrop, Me. He then went to the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries as the Chief Engineer for 23 years, retiring in 2000. He made many friends, one of which recently told the family he was an institution and is still remembered. He was a Master Maine Guide, participated in the National Guard, Winthrop Fire Department, and an involved member of many civic organizations.

He is survived by his wife Nancy Taylor, son Ronald Taylor and wife Joyce, daughter Dawn Taylor, grandsons Kempton Roy, Camden Roy. He was predeceased by his son Daniel Taylor and daughter Terrie Taylor. He leaves behind little sister Melissa Corrigan and special friends Dew and Sue Clark.

Visitation will be held at Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin Street in Winthrop, on Friday, July 31 from 4-6 pm. Interment will be held at Maine Veterans Cemetery in Augusta for immediate family at a later date yet to be determined.
