AUGUSTA - Glenda Christina (Dow) Briggs, 82, 23 Fifth Ave., Augusta, died peacefully on Monday, Nov. 22, 2010, at her home, with her family by her side. She was born July 16, 1928, in Portland, the daughter of Maurice and Julia (Stinson) Dow. She attended schools in Deer Isle and graduated from Deering High School in Portland. She met her husband, Carleton E. Briggs, while attending Deering High School. They were married Nov. 8, 1946, and enjoyed 64 years of love and dedication to each other and raising three sons. Glenda was best known to her family and friends as mother, wife, grandmother and great-grandmother, and always giving of herself to family and friends. Her love and guidance will shine on for all of us who knew her. Glenda was a homemaker all her life and child-care provider for many years and as stated by her family doctor, 'She raised half the city of Augusta.' Glenda is survived by her husband, Carleton; her sons Darrell and his wife, MaryBeth, of Augusta and their children Angela, Cadence, Keith and Luke; David and his wife, Karen, of Hallowell, and their children Estelle, Colby, Hibby and Katie; Douglas and his wife, Sarah, of Gardiner and their children Jennifer Maverde and Samantha Philbrook; and five great-grandchildren. Many special thanks to mom's caregivers Althea, Melinda, Vanessa, Emily and Lynn. Relatives and friends are invited to visit from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 27, 2010, at Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home, One Church St., Augusta, where a celebration of her life will follow the same day at 2:30 p.m. Burial will occur Sunday, Nov. 28, 2010, at 1:30 p.m. at South Side Cemetery on Pine Street in Skowhegan.
