Gloria Ann Parlee age 96, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and a long-time resident of MGLTC at Gray Birch in Augusta, Maine passed away peacefully from natural causes on May 15th, 2024, surrounded by her family who loved her dearly.
Gloria was born in Springfield, Massachusetts on November 12, 1927, the youngest child and only daughter of Marie and Frank Leblanc. The young couple, along with their oldest son, immigrated from Sackville New Brunswick, Canada to Saint Albans in Northern Vermont where they settled for many years. Gloria's 3 older brothers Hedley, Laurie, and Roger all became US Marines stationed overseas during WWII, while her father Frank, a railroad engineer, was recruited by the government as a consultant in the planning and building of the Panama Canal. Gloria attended a small private all-girls Catholic high school in Canada where the students were expected to speak only French. As a teenager, Gloria loved writing poetry, singing, listening to music, dancing, and going to movies and theater shows, however shopping and fashion were her favorite passions. Gloria's love of movies and mastery of entertainment trivia were life-long hobbies she imparted on the generations that followed. Her love of glamour, clothes, and fashion were evident in her very captivating presence. Known for her charm, elegance, and melodious singing voice to match Doris Day, Gloria was also unfailingly quick-witted, deeply caring, infectiously humorous, and had a uniquely non-traditional outlook on life that left an impact on those who were lucky enough to know her. She instilled in her family the importance of self-care, self-love, and keeping your faith.
After high school, Gloria and her mother relocated to Fitchburg, Massachusetts with Cousin Ada and family. She attended Business School in Boston, beginning her career as a legal secretary at a prestigious law firm. Over the years Gloria managed properties, worked in sales and retail, and eventually retired from a long-time position where she spent many years as Personnel Director with Statler Tissue in Medford, MA. During her years at Statler, Gloria and family gained an intimate friendship with Leonard Sugarman and his family which lasted throughout their lives.
After her retirement in 1997, the year of the famous Ice Storm, Gloria and husband Bob relocated to Maine and eventually many family members would follow their journey. In retirement, Gloria committedly rooted for the Red Sox, and would host weekend slumber parties with her grandchildren and great grandchildren to watch movies, play cards and board games like Monopoly or Scrabble, and of course to share in her love of sweets and treats, such as hot dogs, banana splits, popcorn, Jello in fancy glass bowls, and jelly donuts, to name a few! She also had a knack for finding buffets for the family to visit, wherever they'd open. Gloria and Bob opened their own home to the family on every holiday, for a meal or an after-meal gathering and hours of conversation, laughter, presents, and even more desserts.
Gloria is predeceased by son, Gregory M. Smith, former son-in law Richard Roy and beloved cousins Red and Ada Richard and their son Paul along with countless friends and family members with whom she is now reunited.
Gloria is survived by her husband of 62 years, Bob, daughters Karen Manning and spouse Ted, Christine Currie and spouse Steve, Gayle McGuire and spouse Walter. Grandchildren Matthew Roy and wife Colleen, along with their children Nathan and Charlotte; Gloria Peterson and spouse Keir along with their son Jack; Conrad Woodman and wife Erika along with their children Carmella, Conrad Jr, and Cosmo; Justine Woodman and her partner Morgan Keith; Kayla McGuire; step-grandchildren Jared, Mackenzie, and Megan Currie along with their children; Todd and Troy Manning along with their children.
