HALLOWELL - Dr. Philip G. Good, 91, died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2005, at the Maine Veterans' Home in Augusta. He was born in Malden, Mass., on Dec.18, 1913, the son of Ralph N. and Alice (Thomas) Good. He graduated from South Portland High School in 1932, and received his bachelor's degree cum laude from Bowdoin College in 1936 and a medical degree from Harvard University in 1940. After postgraduate education in the field of pediatric medicine at Yale's New Haven and Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago, he joined the Army as medical officer, serving as division artillery surgeon with the 20th Armored Division in the European theatre of operations. Dr. Good started his own practice of pediatrics in Portland in 1946 and served as chief of pediatrics at Maine Medical Center from 1958 to 1968. During this period, in 1960, he organized the first pediatric residency at the center. He was a 50-year member of the Maine Medical Association, as well as a member of the American Board of Pediatrics, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the New England Pediatric Society. At Bowdoin College, he was a member of Zeta Psi Fraternity, captain of the indoor and outdoor track teams as well as being elected permanent president of the class of 1936. As an undergraduate, he was a recipient of the Frank H. Whittier Award presented by the Bowdoin College athletic department as an outstanding character scholar and athlete. After graduation, he served as president of the Alumni Council from 1952 to 1953. During Dr. Good's college career, he was prominent in track and field, with many outstanding performances in the hurdle events both nationally and internationally. He holds the Bowdoin College record in the 110-meter hurdles, 14.5 seconds. He was inducted into the Maine Sports Hall of Fame in 1983. Dr. Good moved to Augusta in 1969, where he was employed as assistant program coordinator of the regional medical program for three years. He later practiced pediatrics in that city with two of his former residents, Dr. Theodore Russell and Dr. Terrence Sheehan, during the period of 1971-1978. From 1978 through 1993, he worked with Maine's Department of Human Services in the disability determination branch as a pediatric consultant. He was predeceased by his wife, Eleanor Munson Good, whom he married in 1941 at Silver Bay, N.Y.; and a son, Ralph E. Good. He is survived by two sons, Peter M. Good of Lewiston and Mark C. Good and his wife, Pam, of Lancaster, Pa.; a daughter, Ann M. Pare and her husband, Phil, of Augusta; a sister, June Soule of Woolwich; also seven grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. At the family's request, there will be no visiting hours. A private graveside service will be held at a later date.
