AUGUSTA ? Greta Hanks Merrill, 95, formerly of 33 Duncan Road, died Friday, Dec. 21, 2001, at the Gorham House in Gorham. Greta was born in Augusta, Aug. 22, 1906, the daughter of Elden Whitten and Grace M.P. (Hunt) Hanks. She was a lifelong resident of Augusta, except for the past several years when she resided in Gorham, and was the wife of Herbert L. Merrill Jr., who died in 1988. Greta worked for many years as reporter for the Maine State House of Representatives and performed volunteer service for St. Mark's Home. She is survived by her three sons, Peter, of South Portland, John, of Boxford, Mass., and William, of Jamaica Plain, Mass.; and by several grandchildren, nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 29, at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Summer Street, Augusta, with the Rev. Dr. J. John Keggi officiating. A reception will follow the ceremony. A private burial will be at Kling Cemetery in Augusta. Arrangements are in the care of Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home, 1 Church Street, Augusta.
