AUGUSTA ? Harold C. Durrell, 80, of Augusta died Thursday, May 1, 2003, at Augusta Rehabilitation Center after a long illness. Harold was born Sept. 3, 1922, in Strong, the son of Durward and Freda (Mitchell) Durrell. He attended schools in Wilton and graduated from Wilton Academy in 1939. Harold received a bachelor of science degree in physical education from Springfield College, Springfield, Mass., after having served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He was employed for many years by Forster Manufacturing Co. Inc., and worked as plant manager of the East Wilton mill for 15 of those years. Harold was involved in the Wilton community and served on the Board of Selectman and the Mount Blue school board. He also worked to bring youth sports and other activities to Wilton. Harold loved both playing and watching sports. He looked forward to the fall bringing the local fairs and an opportunity to watch horse racing with friends. He became a big fan of the Cony girls sports teams while watching his granddaughters play field hockey. Harold also loved watching his grandson and dog swim at their home on Togus Pond. He was predeceased by a daughter, Denise; his wife Janet (Kennedy) Durrell; and a brother, Herbert Durrell. Survivors include his daughter, Dawn and husband Roger Stiles of Augusta; granddaughters Vanessa and husband Roland Duquette of Hallowell, Veronica Santarelli and her fiance Peter McMahon of Dracut, Mass.; a grandson, Nicholas Stiles of Augusta; two brothers, Phillips Durrell and wife Evelyn of Jay and Durward Durrell Jr. and wife Geraldine of South China; several nieces, nephews, and his beloved dog, Hunter. There will be no visiting at this time. A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, May 10, at Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home, 1 Church St., Augusta. Burial will be at a later date in Lakeview Cemetery in Wilton. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross, PO Box 439, Auburn 04212.
