KENTS HILL - Harold E. 'Mac' Macomber, 89, of Kents Hill, died Friday, March 18, 2011, at his home. He was born in Augusta on July 27, 1921, the son of Irving and Winifred (Hindhaugh) Macomber. Mac attended Monmouth schools and served with the Army, 30th Infantry Division, 230th Field Artillery Battalion. He saw action in the Battle of the Bulge, as well as other battles in the European Theatre. From his teenage years on, Mac learned how to be a mechanic working on any type of motor or engine. He specialized in antique automobiles, including the Model T, which he took his drivers test on. He also ran a gas station that used to be at Readfield Corner but, being an entrepreneur at heart, he soon started a succession of his own businesses. Besides owning and running Mac's Garage, for many years he owned a fleet of school buses on which he hauled all of the town's schoolchildren. In the summer, Mac's Charter Bus Service used those same buses to pick up campers at the train station and take them to the various summer camps in the area. Before Kents Hill School got its own buses and vans, Mac's buses also took many of the sports teams to their various meets and sporting events. He married Jean Wills on Aug. 11, 1951. During the late '60s and early '70s, Mac and Jean owned and operated the Rainbow Dance Hall in Readfield Depot. The Rainbow featured live bands that played good old-time music, including the sounds of the Big Bands and a few square dances thrown in for good measure. Jean sold the tickets at the door, and Mac was a natural bouncer, having served as a Kennebec County Deputy Sheriff and a Town Constable. Besides serving as Constable, Mac was also a Selectman, First Selectman and Animal Control Officer. He was also a member of the Lafayette Masonic Lodge in Readfield for more than 50 years. He was predeceased by his wife, Jean Macomber, in 2007 and a brother, Robert Macomber. He is survived by two daughters: Dorothy 'Dottie' Macomber and her husband Roger McLellan of Woburn, Mass., and Ann Macomber Hecker and her husband, Robert, of Signal Mountain, Tenn.; two grandchildren: Abigail Jean Hecker and her fianc? Stokely Gray Caldwell III of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Jacob Henry Macomber Hecker of Signal Mountain, Tenn.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Visiting will be held on Tuesday, March 22, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin St., Winthrop, where a celebration of Mac's life will be held on Wednesday at 2.
