Obituary

SIDNEY- Harriet E. Neptune, 86, passed away unexpectedly on February 5th, at the Alfond Center for Health in Augusta, with her loving family at her side. She was born on September 11, 1937, in Augusta to the late Harry and Ethel (Gilley) Eaton. She married Wilton E. Neptune in 1954 and together they loved and nurtured what eventually became a family of eighty. Harriet attended Augusta public schools, after high school she went on to become a mother of eight and full-time homemaker. After her husband's passing, she worked for the State of Maine for 35 years, and being the hard worker she was, she didn't retire until 2009 at the age of seventy-two. Harriet was passionate about the Red Sox. Not merely a fan, she could share statistics and the team roster with the best of them. She attended her first game with her dad in 1954, when ticket prices were $1.50. She enjoyed many trips to Fenway Park over the years and got extremely excited when she was driving and saw the Citgo sign ahead. She was thrilled to receive a ticket to sit in a Green Monster seat after it opened, and to witness the breaking of "The Curse" in 2004 was a dream come true. Harriet enjoyed sewing and made many of her children's clothes, wedding dresses, and later, school bags for UMCOR. Over the years she knitted numerous mittens, hats, sweaters, and prayer shawls. She loved playing scrabble and Words with Friends, and when possible, would spend hours boating. Every summer her greatest joy was sitting poolside watching all her "littles" swim, then sharing together Gifford's strawberry ice cream. She was an avid reader, music enthusiast, and loved the theater. She was a woman of great faith and held membership in the UMC wherever she lived, lastly back at Green Street UMC. Harriet was a dedicated mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, devoting her whole life to care for, love, and to spend time with her family. She was a "lady" in every sense of the word and will be sorely missed by so many. In addition to her loving husband, Harriet is predeceased by 3 of her children, Abraham "Skip" Neptune, Linda Neptune, and Wilton "Bill" Neptune, all whom she passionately missed. She is survived by 5 of her children, Michael Neptune and wife Linda of Augusta, Sharon Neptune Lovejoy and husband Paul of Brunswick, Amy Speck and husband George of Arizona, Sandra Neptune and husband Mark White of Sidney, Jason Neptune, and wife Melissa of Cumberland. She had 26 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren of whom she absolutely adored and found great joy in. She was also a great-great grandmother and an honorary Mum and Nana to so many others. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Harold Alfond Center for Cancer Care, in honor of her loved ones. The family would also like to thank her care team on 2 West at MaineGeneral who took such good care of her. A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, February 10th at 1:00 pm at the Green Street United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Shandirai Mawokomatanda presiding.
