WINTHROP - Harry Irving Scott, 86, of Winthrop died Tuesday, March 16, 2004, at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta. He was born May 2, 1917 in Cos Cob, Conn., the son of Stanley Belden and Elsie (Rumpelt) Scott. Harry served in the Army during World War II, fighting at the Battle of the Bulge. During his service, he was awarded the Bronze Star and the Silver Star. He was captured and held prisoner, by the Germans, at Stalag 4B. Mr. Scott moved to Winthrop from Stamford, Conn., in 1949. He worked for many years as a mail carrier for the United States Postal Service. He also sold Christmas trees for a number of years. Harry was one of the founding members of the Squire Town Squares. In his younger days, he enjoyed golfing, gardening and bowling. He also enjoyed walking up the road to Scott's Field to watch area youths play baseball. Mr. Scott is survived by his wife of 62 years, Helen MacDevitt Scott; three sons, Barry Scott and his wife, Kelley, of Oakland, Bradley Scott and his wife, Nancy, of Gorham, and Brian Scott and his wife, Jill, of Hallowell; a daughter, Sharon Lyons and Denis Moore, of Danbury, Conn.; three granddaughters, Laurie McDougal of Danbury, Jessica Scott of Greenwich, Conn., and Lindsey Scott of Revere, Mass.; and three step-granddaughters, Karry, Shannon and Leeann, of Maine and Pennsylvania. A committal service will be held at 12 p.m. noon Friday at the new Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta. Relatives and friends may visit Harry's family 5-7 p.m. Friday at Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin St., Winthrop. Memorial donations may be made in Harry's name to the charity of your choice.
