Obituary

WINTHROP- Helen A. Bishop of Winthrop, Maine passed into the presence of her Lord on December 26, 2024, at the age of 99. She was born Helen Miller on September 6, 1925, in Newfield, New York and became a Christian at an early age. When a teenager she felt a call to Christian service and attended Providence Bible Institute (later Barrington College). While there she sang in a quartet that visited many churches in northern New England and while touring, she met her future husband, Linwood C Bishop. After graduation and marriage, the bishops began their ministries at the Paris Hill and West Paris Baptist Churches. It was at Paris Hill that her son, Stephen, was born. After several years in Providence, Rhode Island where her daughter Marilyn (Webster) was born, the bishops moved to Coventry, Rhode Island. It was there where Helen would serve alongside her husband for thirty-plus years at Knotty Oak Baptist Church. One of Helen's life-long joys was working with children. In Sunday Schools, Vacation Bible Schools and kindergartens, Helen always enjoyed helping to form these young lives and instructing them in Christian principles. While living in Coventry she worked for many years as a recess aide at Western Coventry Elementary School. In later years she would work at Winthrop Grade School as a "lunch lady" and library volunteer. She amazingly always would remember each child's name. Her other great joy was music. As an alto, her participation in choirs, small vocal groups and as a soloist brought great pleasure to herself and those who heard her sing. After a career in Coventry, the Bishops moved to Winthrop, Maine but continued very active in the community and particularly at Hope Baptist Church in Manchester. There Helen continued to bring joy to young lives and to participate in musical activities. Always faithful to her beliefs, her life of service has brought great comfort to many, and she will be greatly missed by those who loved her dearly. She is survived by her daughter Marilyn Webster, her son-in-law David, her son Stephen and her daughter-in-law Silvana. A memorial service is being planned for January 18th at 1:00 at Hope Baptist Church in Manchester, Maine. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hope Baptist Church. Obituary also can be found on the website for Roberts Funeral Home Winthrop, Maine. Arrangements and guidance are in the care of Roberts Funeral Home and Cremation Care, 62 Bowdoin Street, Winthrop, Maine.
