MADISON - Helen M. Coburn, 101, of Madison and formerly of Winthrop, died Saturday May 22, 2010 in Madison.

She was born in Readfield July 3, 1908 the daughter of James Elmore and Mabel Annette (Stone) Harvey. As she grew up she spent part of her year in Washington, D. C. and part in Readfield. She was a 1927 graduate of the Kent?s Hill Seminary and Women?s College. She married Sherman Horacio Scribner in 1928 and they had a son, Sherman Harvey Scribner in 1929. They divorced in 1935 and she married Clare Edgar Coburn in 1940. They had a daughter, Marjorie Helen Coburn in 1942.

Most summers were spent at the Harvey Farm in Readfield until 1946 when the farm was sold and they moved to Winthrop. Helen went to work for the state of Maine in 1935 and then to Bonafide Mills offices as a secretary after her daughter started school. Later, Helen returned to the state to work as a medical secretary and then ran the print shop at the state hospital where she taught typing to residents and published the monthly news letter. She retired in 1971 with 27 years of service.

Helen was a member of the Readfield Grange, a life member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Readfield and then Winthrop, past member of the Winthrop Business and Professional Women?s Club, and was the fourth generation to belong to the General Federation of Women?s Clubs/Maine Federation of Women?s Clubs. She was past president of the Winthrop Thursday Club and a current member of the GFWC Livermore Falls Women?s Club, and a life member of the Readfield Historical Society.

Helen?s favorite hobbies were reading, hunting, and fishing, enjoyed spending time with her family and was a great dog lover.

Mrs. Coburn was predeceased by her husband, Clare Coburn; her son, Sherman Harvey Scribner, and step-daughter, Bonnie Pullen.

She is survived by her daughter, Marjorie Coburn Black and her husband, Ralph; step-daughters, Myrtle Sargis and Judith Pooler and her husband, Don; Daughter-in-law, Evelyn Scribner; grandsons, Ralph F. Black, II, and his partner, Lisa Parent, James H. Black and his wife, Lisa, Sherman Hugh Scribner and his wife, Linda, Stuart H. Scribner, Scott H. Scribner, Richard Bilodeau and his wife, Nancy, Michael Bilodeau and his wife, Sherry, Peter Grant, Donnie Pooler and his wife, Kelly, Brion Pooler, Terry Pooler, and Larry Pooler; Granddaughters, Sharon Sproul, Linda Davis, Cheryl Jean, Debra Risinger, Donna Bellows, and many great-grandchildren.

A celebration of Helen?s life will be held at Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin Street, Winthrop,? Friday at 1:00p.m.
