Obituary

WINTHROP- Jack Berton Everett, 91, of Winthrop, Maine, died peacefully in hospice at Togus VA Medical Center on January 21, 2025. As a champion of the underdog, Jack was humble, kind, and gracious. He formed many close friendships during his lifetime.  Jack was born on April 29, 1933 in Brunswick, Maine to Carrie and Frank Everett.  He was a graduate of Winthrop High School. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Jack furthered his education with college courses in accounting and substance abuse. Working in the shipping business, he met his future wife. They were often seen at The Oxbow in Winthrop dancing the jitterbug to hits of the 50s and 60s. They married in 1960. After fourteen years of marriage, the couple agreed to a no-fault divorce, and remained supportive of each other and role models to their three children. Jack continued to live in his Winthrop residence for the rest of his life. Ever mindful of those in need, he provided a temporary home to several friends and extended family over the years. Ambitious and entrepreneurial, Jack ran Everett's Trucking, a trash route established by his mother. As his familiar truck rolled through Winthrop neighborhoods, he beeped and exchanged waves with residents, working the route until he was 90 years old. As an artistic fellow, Jack loved to dance, collect sculptures, and recite poetry. An advocate for people accepting themselves, he flew the Rainbow flag and the American flag.  Jack's quick wit and gift for storytelling lit up many faces. He wasn't afraid to be introspective and learn from his mistakes. At midlife, he joined Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). AA became his spiritual path and community. He was 37 years sober when he died. Jack is survived by an older sister, his former wife, two daughters and a son, as well as two grandsons. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him. If he were here, he would say, "Thank you, everyone!" A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, March 22, 2025 (noon to 2pm) at the American Legion at 117 Bowdoin Street in Winthrop Maine. Stories of Jack will be welcome!  In lieu of flowers, take some time to reach out and help someone in your community who is in need. Jack would love that. Arrangements and guidance are in the care of Roberts Funeral Home and Cremation Care, 62 Bowdoin Street, Winthrop, Maine. Condolences, memories, and photos may be shared with the family on the obituary page of the Roberts Funeral Home website, www.khrfuneralhomes.com
