WINTHROP - James H. Barrett, 92, of Hillside Avenue died Saturday, May 30, 2009, in Winthrop. He was born in Danforth on July 17, 1916, the son of James and Catherine (Welsh) Barrett. Jimmy graduated from Danforth High School and enlisted in the Army. He attended infantry school in 1950, the Command and General Staff officer school in 1961 and U.S. Army school in 1962, and retired as a colonel from the Army Reserve in 1969. During his military career, which spanned World War II and Korea, he served with the 4th Armored Division as a member of the 37th Tank Battalion. After his service, Jimmy worked as manager for the state Department of Labor in the Bangor office. On June 6, 1976, he married Frances Stevens. He was an avid reader of books and newspapers. He and his wife enjoyed summers at their camp on Great Pond in North Belgrade, and spending winters traveling to St. Petersburg, Fla. He was a member of St. Francis Xavier Church in Winthrop. He was predeceased by a son, James Barrett, in 1985. He is survived by his wife, Frances Barrett, of Winthrop; a daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Barrett, of Wakefield, R.I.; a grandson, James Scott Barrett, of New York City; and several nieces and nephews. Visiting hours will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 3, at Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin St., Winthrop. A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 9 a.m. Thursday at St. Francis Xavier Church, Route 133, Winthrop. Burial with military honors will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery, Belgrade. Following the committal at the cemetery, relatives and friends are invited to attend a reception at the North Belgrade Community Center on Route 8.
