Wayne - Janet Ellen (Syson) Folk, 86, died from a pair of strokes on May 12, 2026. Her final days were at Andwell Hospice House in Auburn Maine, surrounded by her family, friends, and her beloved dog, Luce.
She was born on November 9th, 1939 in Arbor, NJ to Margaret & Joseph Syson. Returning to college after raising her two boys, she graduated from the University of Maine in 1982. It was the same year her youngest son, Karl Folk, graduated from high school. Jan went on to work at Maine General Hospital in Augusta as a Registered Nurse for over twelve years.
Jan married her beloved husband, Dallas Folk, on September 5th, 1959, in Piscataway, NJ. Together they shared 65 years of marriage and raised their two sons, Mark and Karl. Jan was an incredible mother.
In addition to working as a nurse and raising her family, Jan was very active in her community. She was a Wayne First Responder for many years, an avid supporter of the Cary Memorial Library and a member of the Wayne Community Church. She received the Helen Hicks Healy Award in 1996 for her service to the town of Wayne. She could talk with knowledge, passion, and conviction about professional tennis, politics, the Boston Red Sox, and the New England Patriots.
Jan loved music. She played and taught the piano and classical guitar. She was an early riser and would welcome each new day by sipping tea and moving with grace around the house to the sounds of Mozart, Beethoven, Vivaldi and sometimes Johnny Cash. She became a member of the cherished Nell's Bells, playing in church on many Sunday mornings, Christmas, and throughout the state of Maine.
Jan was an avid tennis player starting in childhood. For decades Jan and her husband would play doubles against their two sons, and often won. As the boys grew older, Jan was Team Mom for the Maranacook High tennis team for over five years. She was playing doubles weekly with friends at the Kennebec Valley Tennis Association until shortly before her death.
Jan was an accomplished seamstress making quilts, clothing, and adorable stuffed animals. She loved cooking and baking and was a gourmet chef and chocolatier. Jan was a voracious reader. As part of a program promoted by the Wayne Library to honor long-standing families in Wayne, Jan wrote and published A Life, a Time, a Recollection: Marion Davenport (1990). Jan loved gardening, photography, and the woods. She walked almost daily among the trees with her dog, Luce.
Jan will always be remembered for her generosity in her caring for others, and for her subtle, dry and flawless wit. Many lives were touched by Jan's quiet acts of kindness.
She is survived by her son Karl Folk and wife Kathy, her daughter-in-law, Lisa Folk, Karl's daughters, Abbi and Sammi Folk, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dallas Folk, her oldest son Mark, her parents, and two brothers Richard and Douglas.
Please join her family for a memorial reception on Friday, June 12, 2026 from 1:00 PM-3:00 PM, at the Augusta Country Club. Welcome, eulogies and the sharing of thoughts begin at 1:15 PM.
