FAYETTE - Jean Elizabeth (Wheeler) Hewett, 88, died November 1, 2024, at Hospice House in Auburn.
She was born in Hudson, MA on October 13, 1936, to Alden A. and Hattie Mae (Wills) Wheeler.
Jean lived most of her life in Fayette, Maine with eight brothers and one sister. She attended local one room schoolhouses and graduated from Kents Hill School in 1955. One week later, she married the love of her life, Walter F. Hewett. Walter and Jean owned and operated the Fayette Country store from 1961 to 1985. Later, she worked for the Winthrop schools as a lunch lady until retirement.
Jean served her community as a member of the Fayette Women’s Fire Auxiliary for many years. She also had many interests and hobbies. She loved crocheting, reading, coloring, playing cards, bingo and assembling countless puzzles. She also amassed a large collection of salt and pepper shakers and owls. She was an avid gardener for many years. In 2009, Jean experienced a major stroke and lived in numerous assisted living facilities and nursing homes. Most important to her, however, was her loving family and her many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren
She was predeceased by an infant daughter and her husband Walter in 2005 as well as seven brothers and one sister.
She is survived by one son, Ronald Hewett and his wife, Orra Lee of Fayette; three daughters, Susan Demers and her husband Ronald of Coopers Mills; Linda Elliot and her husband Robert of Mount Vernon and Marcia Millett and her husband Timothy of Whitefield. She is also survived by one brother John Wheeler and his wife Garnet of Chesterville. Jean also was blessed with eight grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and two great- great grandchildren as well numerous nieces, nephews and grand nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit from 11:00 to 1:00 PM on Tuesday November 12 at Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin Street in Winthrop. A celebration of Jean’s life will immediately follow starting at 1:00 PM. Burial will follow at Fayette Mills Cemetery.
