GLENBURN -- Staff Sgt. Jessica Marie Wing, 42, of Glenburn, died Monday, Aug. 27, 2012, while serving in Kuwait. Wing died in a noncombat-related incident on her sixth overseas deployment after 23 years of service in the Army and National Guard. She was an experienced and respected avionics mechanic. In her long career she had been stationed in Hawaii, North Carolina, Virginia and Maine and had seen overseas duty in Korea and Kuwait, UN missions in Haiti and Bosnia (twice), along with two combat tours in Iraq. Her tenure and the range of her experience made her a mentor, coach, and unofficial den mother to younger soldiers in her unit. She was energetic and loved outdoor activity -- hunting, fishing, or simply tramping through the Maine woods. She also loved animals and was devoted to her dogs. Wing had deep respect for the environment and all living creatures and this translated into a sense of responsibility to her family and her community and into a profound sense of duty. She was honest, direct, and reliable. She took in many strays, both canine and human. Jessica is survived by her father, Stanley Hugh Wing, of Littleton; two sisters, Stephanie Wing Tipton, and her husband, John, of Chicago, Ill., and Allison Gale Salvin and her husband, John, of Hilbert, Wis.; a brother, Stephen Hugh Wing; and her long-time partner, Chris Stafford. She is also survived by one aunt, one uncle and four cousins, a niece, Megan Salvin, of Wisconsin; and nephews Christopher Salvin, of Massachusetts, and Levi Tipton, of Chicago. Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 8, at the Augusta National Guard Armory, 279 Western Ave, Augusta, followed by a funeral service at 2 p.m.. Interment with military honors will immediately follow at the Maine Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta.
