Fayette ~ John (Jack) Patrick Smith, 81, died at Togus Springs VA Center in Augusta on August 9, 2017. He was born July 9, 1936 in Youngstown, Ohio, the son of Norman and Marian (Meadors) Smith. He attended schools in Youngstown and in Tucson, Arizona. In 1953 he enlisted in the US Marine Corps and worked as a tank mechanic at Twentynine Palms Marine Corps Base in Californa. In 1955 Jack married Michaeleen Buckley in Arizona and they became the parents of three sons and two daughters. When Jack lived in Florida for a period of time, he painted houses. For most of his life, he was a mechanic. Jack married Shirley Belanger in 1984 and they have resided at their home on Lovejoy Pond near Fayette since then. Jack loved deep-sea fishing, hunting, calling Bingo, and dancing with Shirley. He cherished the times he spent with great granddaughters Sadie and Lexie. He was a member of American Legion Post 2 and a lifetime member of Disabled American Veterans. He is survived by his wife Shirley, sons Robert and his wife Sharon of Broadus, MT,: Norman and his wife Juanita of Richmond, MO, and Joseph and his wife Wanda of Broadus, MT; daughters Lucinda and her husband Mark Skinner of Riverside, CA and Denise and her husband Keith Stocker of Hesperia, CA; sister Norma Payne of Tucson, AZ; stepdaughter Robin Hakala; stepson Victor Mortero, 12 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters Mary Ellen Freeman and Pat Uhl. Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday August 14, at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland, P.O. Box 336, Westbrook ME 04098. Arrangements are in the care of Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home and Cremation Service, One Church St., Augusta where condolences, memories, photos and videos may be shared with the family on the obituary page of the website at www.khrfuneralhomes.com
