RANDOLPH - John R. Stevens, 90, passed away at Augusta Rehabilitation Center on Monday, Nov. 30, 2009.
He was born in Merrill on July 20, 1919, the son of Jasper D. and Myrtle (Young) Stevens.
John graduated from Merrill High School and the University of Maine, Orono, before enlisting in the Army in June 1942, where he served in the Army Air Corps until Dec. 31, 1945.
In 1946, he married Anne Kennedy and they farmed together for 10 years in Dyer Brook before moving to Winthrop. At that time, John began his employment with the state of Maine in the Department of Agriculture, where he remained until his retirement at age 62.
He was an avid bowler and golfer and loved being outdoors with his buddies. He was a faithful member of Randolph United Methodist Church and enjoyed the many wonderful friends he made there.
John was blessed with a wonderful family, Carolyn Hall and her husband, Harold, of Claremont, N.H., Alan Stevens and his wife, Kim, of Manhattan, Kan., Kathryn Laptewicz and her husband, Jim, of Augusta, and Susan Buzzell and her husband, Kelly, of Winthrop. He had eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Also surviving him are his wife, Anne (Kennedy) Stevens, of Randolph; his sister, Katherine Degon and her husband, Elmer, of Augusta; and his brother, Laurel Stevens and his wife, Phyllis, of Southbury, Conn.; along with many nieces and nephews.
In honor of John's wishes, there will be no visiting hours. A celebration of his life will take place at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 3, at Randolph United Methodist Church, 16 Asbury St., Randolph. A reception will immediately follow at the church. A private family committal service and interment will be at the new Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta at a later date.
