Jordan Bruno Mangin Jr., lovingly known to many as "Joe," passed away peacefully at home on May 26, 2026, after a lengthy illness, surrounded by his loving family. He was 82 years old.
Born on October 16, 1943, Joe was the son of the late Jordan Bruno Mangin Sr. and Dorothy Mangin. A lifelong resident of Winthrop, Maine, Joe dedicated his life to his family, his community, and his country.
Joe proudly served in the United States Army and remained deeply patriotic throughout his life. He was also a devoted member of the American Legion Post 40 for 54 years.
Joe spent 35 years working at International Paper in Jay, Maine, where he was a member of the mill's Quarter Century Club.
His commitment to public service was evident through his remarkable 26-year career with the Winthrop Fire Department, retiring as Deputy Chief. During his years with the department, he also served as the Town Fire Warden. Beyond his official duties, Joe was deeply involved in youth sports in the community—coaching, working on the football chain gang, and driving the bus for local teams. He took pride in helping generations of young athletes and supporting community activities whenever needed.
A bit of a prankster, Joe was known for his quick wit and dry sense of humor, always able to bring a smile to those around him with perfectly timed remarks and stories. Above all else, he was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend.
Joe will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to family, his service to others, his humor, and the lasting impact he made on the Winthrop community. His legacy of kindness, strength, and love will continue through all who knew him.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Barbara Mangin of Winthrop; his son, James Mangini and wife Phuong Mangini of South Portland; grandchildren Jordan and Grace Mangini of South Portland and Ahn Mazur of Westbrook; and great-grandchildren Archer and Lenora Mazur.
He is also survived by his sisters Sally Noel and Linda Belz; his brother David Mangin; brother-in-law Darron Carter; sister-in-law Jackie Blodgett; and many beloved nieces and nephews, including Brian Labbe and Keith Belz, and his loyal quadruped Gunther.
He was predeceased by his granddaughter, Jenna Mangini.
The family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to Joe's special care team— Darron Carter, Amanda Bowden, Jonathan Blodgett, Leilani Lowe, Chaplain Pamela Beliveau and the Andwell Hospice Care Team—for the kindness, comfort, and support they provided during his illness.
Visting hours will be held on June 17 from 4pm-6pm, and a funeral service will be held on June 18 at 10am at Roberts Funeral Home Winthrop with a celebration of life to follow at the American Legion Post 40. Interment and a graveside ceremony will be held on June 22 at 11 am at Calvary Cemetery in South Portland.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to his memory to MaineHealth Barbara Bush Children's Hospital in memorandum of Jenna Mangini, youth sports organizations in the Winthrop community or Andwell Health Partners.
