HALLOWELL - Joseph H. Lewis, 71, of Hallowell died Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2006, at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta. He was born in Hallowell on Feb. 11, 1935, the son of Jesse and Nora (Garey) Lewis. He graduated from Belgrade High School and entered the Army. Joe served as part of the Army's occupation in Germany, being discharged in 1957. Joe was employed at Auclair Cycles in Augusta for 50 years. He was still working part-time until recently. He was known to many as 'the bicycle man.' He enjoyed gardening, hunting, playing horseshoes and playing cards with friends. Mr. Lewis was predeceased by his wife, Emily (Staples) Lewis, in 1990. He will be missed by many friends and neighbors, including his sisters-in-law, Judy Staples and Ruthann Staples of Winthrop, and Cora Staples and Louise Giroux of Augusta, along with several nieces and nephews. A service will be held in the Father LeClair Chapel of the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Civic Center Drive, at 10 a.m. Monday. Arrangements are in the care of Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home, 1 Church St., Augusta.
