AUGUSTA ? Joseph A. Libbey, 91, died Wednesday, April 3, 2002, at Maine Veterans' Home in Augusta. He was born in Bangor, March 8, 1911, the son of George and Margaret (Barry) Libbey. Joseph was educated in the Bangor area. He attended the Julliard School of Music for two years, and was first violinist with the Hartford Symphony Orchestra before enlisting in the Army during World War II. He was a private first class and radio operator serving March 6, 1942- Oct. 8, 1945 in the campaigns in Normandy, northern France, the Rhineland and Central Europe. He was the recipient of 4 bronze service stars and a Good Conduct Medal. He later returned to Maine and graduated from the Univerity of Maine at Orono in 1950 with a degree in mechanical engineering. He was employed by the aircraft industry at Pratt and Whitney in Connecticut for most of his career as a research engineer in mechanical and thermodynamics. He worked with some of the first computers used in the design of aircraft. He had been a communicant of St. Mary of the Assumption Church since he retired and moved to Augusta in the 1970s. He was a familiar patron of the Maine State Library, where he pursued his hobby of family genealogy. He kept up with the local Bangor news through the Bangor Daily News, and remained interested in world news, history and geography. In recent years, he was associated with Senior Spectrum through visits at the Cohen Center in Hallowell. Mr. Libbey was very interested in supporting those who were less fortunate, and contributed to several different charitable organizations, such as St. Jude's Hospital. He was also a generous member of the UMaine Alumni. He was a quiet, humble gentleman who will be fondly remembered for his quick smile and his faithfulness to his God. Joseph was predeceased by his brother, Edward Libbey; and two sisters, Margaret Myatt and Ruth Case. He leaves behind two nieces, Ann Moore of Lewis, N.Y., and Elaine Wisneiwski of Elizabethtown, N.Y.; and two nephews, Charles Libbey of Littleton, N.C., and Paul Myatt of Denver Colo., who knew him as 'Uncle Joe' and who he would, even in his later years, drive long distances to visit in other states. He also leaves behind two special friends, Elizabeth Phelps of Winthrop and Elizabeth Gardella of Augusta. Relatives and friends are invited to visit 4-7 p.m. Friday, April 5, at Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home 1 Church St., Augusta. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary of the Assumption Church, Western Ave., Augusta, with Rev. Mike Gendreau, celebrant. Burial will follow at approximately 1 p.m. at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Bangor. For those who wish, donations in his memory can be made either to St. Mary's School, c/o Dan Hickey Center Fund, P.O.
