Obituary

AUGUSTA ~ Judith Brown, 81, passed away on Monday, October 24, 2016 at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Augusta, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born on June 10, 1935, in Augusta, the only child of Kenneth Marsh and Leona Heald (Levy). She lived most of her life in Augusta, graduating from Cony High School in 1953. She had been a member of and went through the chairs of Theta Rho Girls Club, Hallowell. While still in school, she had worked in the office at Brewer’s Hardware Co. and the Probate Court, both in Augusta. Judy met Robert Barnard of Brockton, MA, in 1955 and they were married in 1956. Their two sons, Jim and Dave, joined them in 1957 and 1975, respectively. Bob passed away in 1995. She and Bob had been members of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. Mrs. Brown had been employed almost all of her adult life, juggling work with family responsibilities. Some of these included Bates Manufacturing Edwards Division main office in Augusta, State American Legion office at Togus, Central Maine Power Co. accounting department, Maine State Bar Assoc., and the State Bureau of Taxation (now Revenue Services), retiring as a revenue agent in 1997. In 2000 Judy began a new phase in her life, marrying John P. Brown, who she met about two years before at seniors’ bowling. John used to quip that he always wished for a son and that Judy would have liked to have a daughter and that with this marriage all that was accomplished. Mrs. Brown was predeceased by her parents and her two husbands, Robert Browning Barnard and John Patrick Brown. Surviving are her two sons, James R. Barnard and David P. Barnard; step-daughters, Patricia (Stanley) Harms, Maureen Brown, Sheila (Paul) Brocki, Geralyn Sidders, Martha (Kevin) McCarthy and Mary (Michael) Mahowald; 10 step grandchildren, Rebecca (JW) Ott, John Brown, John (Cheryl) Brocki and Leighanne Brocki, Jason (Rebecca) Sidders and Adam (Tabytha) Sidders, Kyle McCarthy and Marlene McCarthy, Joseph (Amber) Mahowald and Krystan (Lance) Lozan and 10 step great grandchildren, Alexandria and Jonathan Ott, Kellan and Caiden Brocki, Emmett and Reed Sidders, Triston and Chase Mahowald, Wyatt Sidders, and Olivia Lozan, all of whom she loved as her own. Also surviving are four sisters-in-law, Joyce Barnard, Ruth (Arnold) Foster, Barbara (Richard) Brogle, and Patricia (Joseph) Canning; two brothers-in-law, Lawrence Godsoe and Francis (Frances) Browne; and many cousins, nieces and nephews on both the Barnard and Brown Sides. Relatives and friends are invited to visit on Thursday, Oct. 27th from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home, One Church St., Augusta. A celebration of Judy’s life will be at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 28th at The Church at 209 (Prince of Peace Church), 209 Eastern Ave., Augusta. Interment will follow at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Civic Center Drive, Augusta, after which all are invited to the Augusta Elks Club for a reception. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Kennebec Valley Humane Society, 10 Pet Haven Lane, Augusta, Maine 04330 or the American Cancer Society Maine Chapter, 1 Bowdoin Mill Island Ste. 300, Topsham, Maine 04086.
