Julia Diane Mason, 66, of Mount Vernon, Maine, passed away peacefully on May 29th, 2026. Her passing was lovingly witnessed by dear friends.
She was born on July 5th, 1959, in England, something she was proud of because it was a rare attribute. When she was little, she thought the Fourth of July celebrations were for her birthday. The family may have encouraged this idea. As one of four girls in the family, she strove to be unique, and her father often took her hunting and fishing; she was a good fly fisherman and won a New Mexico State Fair prize for the flies she tied.
She started her work life in the Air Force as an Information Systems Programming Technician, so she was an early pioneer in the age of computing. She left the Air Force in 1987 as a Staff Sergeant. She continued her computer-related career through many positions in her civilian work, including her job for St Joseph's Hospital in Syracuse. Her last job was as a Statistician for the State of Maine's Department of Health and Human Services. She loved to work even if she didn't always love her work; she definitely treasured the friends she made in her various jobs.
While in Syracuse, she became a biker; she was so short, her legs could barely hold her big Harley up. She eventually bought a bike with a sidecar that she loved. Her many biker friends were initially dismayed at this little woman who drank little, spoke respectfully, and strongly supported ABATE (American Bikers Aimed Toward Education). They grew to love and treasure her for the beautiful person she was.
Julia loved Maine; though she wasn't born there, she got there as soon as she could. She would wander the state and explore the many beautiful locations. She loved the coast and lighthouses, but she also loved the trees, lakes, and mountains. If an antique shop happened to be on her route, she would stop and buy things that interested her. She was interested in a lot of things, as her friends who helped her move can attest.
She was a very talented artist and could bring life into a pencil sketch of any subject. She was also very interested in crafts, spending many hours finding the craft materials for projects she made or planned for her friends.
Julia took every opportunity to meet people and to build friendships; she was a fiercely loyal friend to many people, and they returned her devotion without reserve.
Julia married Wesley Mason when she was 16. The couple had two sons, both of whom died of SIDs. These deaths were the most traumatic events in Julia's life, but not the only ones. Julia suffered health issues throughout her life; many of which caused her significant pain. Despite surgeries and treatments, she ultimately succumbed to breast cancer over twenty years after she was first diagnosed.
She is survived by her sisters, Theresa L Pobst-Martin (Antony) and Deborah J. Pobst, her niece, Harvest Blue Martin, beloved nephews Robby and Jesse Little, and her ex-husband, Wes Mason. She was preceded in death by her sons, Matthew and Robert Mason, her father Wallace J. Pobst, her mother, Barbara J. Pobst (Thompson), and her sister, Victoria S. Sporleder.
She is also survived by her many friends who find a hole in their lives now that she is gone. These friends made her life at times bearable, often precious, and always joyful.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 3 pm on June 12th, at the American Legion Post 2 off of Capitol Street in Augusta. The family asks that attendees wear bright colors (not black) to the service, because Julia loved color, especially turquoise. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to the American Cancer Society, ABATE, or PALS (Protectors of Animal Life Society) in Winthrop, Maine.
