Obituary

Winthrop - L. Alfred ?Buster? Perry, 89, of Winthrop, died Monday, October 23, 2006 at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston with his family at his side. Buster was born in Winthrop on February 20, 1917, the son of Carroll and Edith (Benson) Perry. He was educated in Winthrop schools and graduated from Winthrop High School in 1935. After graduation, he attended the University of Toronto in Guelph, Ontario, Canada. On August 2, 1941, he married Ruth Lewia and this year they celebrated 65 years of marriage. Buster served in the National Guard Medical Detachment from April 2, 1942 to April 1, 1944, when he was honorably discharged. During his lifetime, he worked for several businesses in Winthrop, retiring from Winthrop Fuel Company in 1982 after many years of service there. After his retirement, he worked as a bus driver for the Winthrop School System. He loved working with the young people and especially enjoyed driving for school sporting events. He also enjoyed driving horses with Loring Norton of Falmouth. Buster was an avid school sports fan and was a member of the Winthrop High School football chain gang for many years. He loved horses and gardening and going to fairs to watch the horse pulling. He was a past member of the Winthrop Fire Department for 29 years, and the Oddfellows-Crystal Lodge #94, Winthrop for many years. His favorite thing was going to ballgames, especially watching his grandsons play and later coach as well as spending time with his family. Buster was predeceased by a brother, Albion Perry, and four sisters, Carolyn, Mildred, Lotta, and Louise Perry. He will be deeply missed by his loving wife, Ruth Perry, of 65 years, of Winthrop; his daughter Jacqueline ?Jackie? Kempton, and her husband, Carlo, of Winthrop; his three grandsons, Chris Kempton and his fianc?, Kim Foster, of Biddeford; Chad Kempton, and his wife, Linda, of Randolph, and Craig Kempton, of Winthrop; three great-granddaughters, Maria and Nadia Kempton, of Randolph, and Paycen Elizabeth Kempton, of Biddeford; his sisters, Lucille Roberts and Patricia Woolston, both of Winthrop, and many nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends are invited to visit Wednesday, October 25, 2006, from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. at Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin Street, Winthrop. A celebration of Buster?s life will be held Thursday, October 26, 2006 at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Winthrop. Burial will follow in Glenside Cemetery, Winthrop. Memorial donations may be made in Buster?s memory to Maine Cancer Foundation, PO Box 553, Portland, ME 04112 or the charity of one?s choice.
