Obituary

January 13, 1939 – April 18, 2024 Larry Deblois (85) passed away at home with his loving wife, Polly, at his side. He was born on January 13, 1939, to the late Fernand and Dora (Lerette) Deblois. Larry attended Winthrop schools and was a graduate of St. Anselm College; following college he went on to become an English teacher and coach at Camden High School, Kents Hill School, and Maranacook Community School, where he was Chair of the English Department. He spent several summers at Breadloaf School of English in Vermont, and the Breadloaf Summer Program at Oxford University in England. Larry happily retired from teaching in 2000. He will be especially missed by the many students and staff whose lives he touched over the years. In his free time, Larry was active in the Readfield Volunteer Fire Department, including several years as its Chief. He participated annually in the "Trek Across Maine" on his bike to raise funds for the American Lung Association. He was a proud member of the Kennebec Performing Arts Company's Jazz Band playing trumpet for many years. Larry was also a Eucharistic Minister at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Gardiner. In addition to his parents, Larry is predeceased by a daughter, Julie. He is survived by his loving wife Pauline, children Lisa Plourd and Terry Sandborn, grandchildren Diana Marable and Bobby York, three great grandchildren. A visitation will be held on Thursday, May 9th from 12-2 PM at Knowlton Hewins Funeral Home 1 Church St., Augusta, followed by a memorial service. The interment will take place at the East Readfield Cemetery. A celebration of life will be held at the Winthrop American Legion Hall Post#40 in Winthrop on Saturday, May 11th from 1-3pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Kennebec Performing Arts, PO Box 481, Augusta, ME 04330. Arrangements are in the care of Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home and Cremation Care, One Church St., Augusta, where memories, condolences and photos may be shared with the family on the obituary page of our website at www.khrfuneralhomes.com
