AUGUSTA ? Leona Mae Dennett Smith, 98, of Augusta, died Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003, at the Augusta Rehabilitation Center, following a long illness. She was born in Scarborough, March 24, 1904, the daughter of Leon and Emelyn (Milliken) Dennett. Mrs. Smith was a very active member of the community. She loved serving and helping many organizations, including the Kennebec Valley Garden Club, the Republican Women's Club, the Augusta Women's club, the Order of Rebekahs and the Green Street United Methodist Church. During World War II, she was active in the Red Cross and received their medal for excellence. Leona was a familiar sight on her porch at 28 Davenport St., where she was often called the 'Mayor of Davenport Street.' She was famous for knitting mittens, scarves, sweaters and caps for the children in the neighborhood and for the church. Her porch was a gathering place for children, and they loved sharing their lives, dolls, plays and dances with her. Her cooking featured cookies and her famous 'burned carrots.' Mrs. Smith was predeceased by her husband, Carroll Smith; her son, Robert L. Smith; her sister, Marguerite Quimby; and her brothers, Carl, Don, Norman, Gordan and Roland Dennett. Leona is survived by her daughter, Jean Bache-Wiig and her husband, John; her brother, Stanley Dennett; her grandchildren, Robert L. Smith Jr. and his wife, Ruth, Sharon Carter and her husband, Roger, Mark Smith and his wife, Diane, Terry Smith, Eric Bache-Wiig, Carol Bache-Wiig, Joseph Cloutier, Robert Cloutier, Debby Cloutier and Sherrill Cloutier; and her great-grandchildren, Matthew and Jeffrey Carter, Christopher and Nicole Smith, and Thomas Smith and Cheranne Bennett. There will be no visiting hours. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30, at Green Street United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jan Davis officiating. Spring burial will be in Coombs Mills Cemetery, Augusta. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Green Street United Methodist Church Building Fund, 13 Green St., Augusta 04330. Arrangements are in the care of Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home, Augusta.
