Obituary

Lois Ellen (Bishop) Peterson passed away on April 21, 2024, at 92 years old. She was born on September 27, 1931, to Evelyn Lydia (Smith) Bishop and Neil J. Bishop in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. Lois was an excellent student and worked throughout her school years before graduating from Pittsfield High School. She could walk to her job at the Colonial Theatre in Pittsfield, and her employer allowed her to work on her homework during the shows. Lois did a lot of walking, even hustling home for lunch during the school day with barely enough time to eat. She always said that was the reason she ate so fast! The First Baptist Church in Pittsfield was a big part of her life as a young adult as she played the piano and enjoyed participating in group activities. She was later married on her birthday in that same church after meeting John W. Peterson at a USO dance after he returned from serving in the U.S. Marine Corp in WWII. Lois was a conscientious and hard worker and enjoyed learning from an optometrist, working as a Home Health Aide, an office manager and at the school cafeteria. She appreciated the meals she sometimes was allowed to take home to help feed her family of four, but her children enjoyed the peanut butter balls best. Lois was a girl scout leader, maintained a vegetable garden and especially enjoyed growing roses along a wooden fence in front of their home in West Newbury Massachusetts. She was talented at repairs, including small electrical projects she had learned from working with her father, whom she was very close to. Her husband was quite social, so she quite often hosted his colleagues when they were traveling. She always welcomed everyone graciously into her home offering home cooked meals whether it was neighborhood children, relatives or friends of her children. She hosted family and friends at a family camp as well, baking 7 blueberry pies with berries picked off the islands one memorable vacation. Winter trips to camp involved pulling all the gear on a sled pulled by snowmobile, adventurous for a city girl! Lois was good at training the family pets and even had the family dog ride on the snowmobile. She always made time for a good book, was a competitive Scrabble player, enjoyed crossword puzzles, crocheting, sewing and rug braiding. We are still enjoying the rugs in our homes today. Moving to Maine in retirement, Lois and John enjoyed traveling in a pop-up camper with family and friends. Her husband's passing brought participation in community trips, summer theatre, a bowling league and more time for bird watching. Lois will mostly be remembered for her generous nature, (especially with family and for environmental causes), a good listener and a kind heart. Lois was pre-deceased by her parents, stepfather, John Finn, brothers Donald and Neil, husband, John, and sons Mark and Glenn. She is survived by her daughter Ellen Peterson Lord, son David Neil Peterson, daughters-in-law Diane Peterson, Karen Peterson and Lynn Peterson, and son-in-law Jerry Lord. Lois leaves her grandchildren, Megan, Melissa, Kerri, Laura, Alessa, John, Morgan, and her great-grandson Mason. A graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 30th at the Readfield Corner Cemetery in Readfield, Maine. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer's Association. Arrangements are in the care of Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin St., Winthrop, where memories, condolences and photos may be shared with the family on the obituary page of our website at www.khrfuneralhomes.com
