MANCHESTER- Lucien "Lou" R. Turmelle, 89, of Manchester, passed away May 15, 2023 at the Maine Veterans Home, Augusta after a long illness.
Lou was born in Augusta on March 19, 1934 to the late Osias and Blanche Turmelle and was the only boy out of their 5 children.
He attended St. Augustine schools before he went on to work at the cotton mill at the young age of 15. In 1954, Lou enlisted in the United States Army and during his enlistment he was stationed in Hawaii. He proudly served his country for 8 years before being honorably discharged in 1962. Lou worked for Statler Tissue for many years before going on to work for the State of Maine in the Bureau of Public Improvement. He happily retired from his position there in 1994 after 20 years of employment.
Lou most often kept himself busy with yard work and puttering around in his garage. In his free time, he loved playing cribbage, bowling on the league that he was a part of, and taking day trips to the coast with his wife Dotty. Occasionally Dotty & Lou would take trips up to Canada or down to the casinos in Connecticut with friends or family.
Lou is survived by his devoted wife Dorothy "Dotty" Turmelle, of Manchester, with whom he shared 70 years; his son Timothy Turmelle of Manchester; his daughter Gail Bartlett of Gilbert, Arizona; his sisters Murielle Martin and husband John of Pittston, Constance Brown of Hudson, Massachusetts; grandchildren, Melanie Sawlivich and husband Brian of Fayette, Justin Turmelle and wife Tasha of Winslow and Travis Bartlett of Gilbert, Arizona.
