MONMOUTH -- Marcia A. Johnson, 92, of Monmouth passed away peacefully at Nicholson's Long Term Care and Rehabilitation on Thursday, June 10, 2004. She was born Nov. 20, 1911, in Whitingsville, Mass., to Alton and Leone Grindle. She grew up in Holbrook, Mass., and in 1929 graduated from Sumner High School. She attended Brockton School of Nursing and worked for many years as a dietitian at Connecticut State Teachers' College in New Britain, where she met and married Rudolph Johnson in 1941. They moved in 1941 to Monmouth and she remained there until 1994, when she moved to Winthrop with her daughter and family. She was a member of Monmouth United Church, the Monmouth Historical Society and the Monmouth Grange. She worked for many years as a switchboard operator in Monmouth and, in later years, did private-duty nursing. She will be remembered for her sense of humor, her fondness for poetry and recital, and her willingness to help others. Her children remember her unfailing readiness to take in their friends and provide a meal whether they were hungry or not. She was predeceased by her husband in 1979. She leaves three siblings and their families, Bruce Grindle of Massachusetts, Mrs. George Loud of Oklahoma and Mrs. Douglas Bragg of Mount Vernon. She also is survived by four children and their families, Amelia Schonzeit and her husband, Don, of Plattsburg, N.Y., Ted Johnson and his wife, Carol, of Monmouth, Rudy Johnson and his wife, Chris, of Monmouth, and Marcia Brophy and her husband, Bill, of Winthrop; 14 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Arrangements are in the care of Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin St., Winthrop. Interment will be at Monmouth Ridge Cemetery. At her request, there will be no services. There will be a family gathering to celebrate her life at a later date.
