Clinton- Margaret Anne Williams, “Margie,” passed away at home in Clinton, Maine on July 19, 2026. She was born in Farmington, Maine on October 24, 1955 a few minutes after her twin brother, Joel McVey Williams, to Clyde E. Williams and Lois Webber Williams.  She spent her childhood in Mount Vernon, Maine attending the local elementary school.  She graduated from Winthrop High School in June 1974 where she was president of the senior class and valedictorian.  She received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Maine at Augusta in 1992, and a master of education degree from the University of Maine at Orono in 2007. In June of 1978 she enlisted in the Maine National Guard as one of the first female soldiers to join the guard. She attended Basic Training at Fort Jackson in their first integrated male/female training companies. Subsequently she worked in personnel for 26 years in both the Maine National Guard and United States Army Reserve, much of this on active duty.

Margaret was promoted to the rank of Master Sergeant (MSG/E8) as a Senior Personnel Specialist. She attended many Non-Commissioned Officer schools; she was the first Maine Army National Guard female soldier to attend the Sergeants Major Academy. MSG Margaret Williams was always recognized throughout any command she served as the as the go to person in all personnel matters. She received 17 various military awards and decorations which includes several awards of the Army Accommodation Medal.

After retirement and living in Brownville and Clinton she volunteered in many activities such as two town budget committees, comprehensive plans, updating of a town charter, member and secretary of an appeals board. She served on three library boards. Most recently she had been volunteering at the Maine Armed Forces Museum. With all this not being enough she went back to school and worked in special education and as adjunct professor.

Golf had been a lifelong passion and for the last eight years she has played at the Waterville Country Club 3 or 4 times a week. She especially enjoyed playing with her twin brother, Joel, and her lifelong friend, Carol.

She is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Terrance Knowles; her sisters, Cynthia (Noel) Pelliccia, Barbara (Kevin) Hoehn, Patricia (William) Flewelling, Beverly (Paul) Olson and Norma Williams and her brothers; Alan (Donna) Williams, Joel Williams and Daniel (Angelique) Williams; son, Trent (Diane Belanger) Knowles; daughter, Jennifer (Chris) Bugbee; grand-daughters, Josie (Brandon) Glidden, AnnaLee Knowles, Brittney Moran and brother-in-law Mike Knowles. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews and two sisters-in-law.

Margie was predeceased by her parents, Clyde E. Williams and Lois Webber Williams; stepfather, Raymond Siegler; a brother, Clyde H.; 2 sisters, Lois and Martha; son Britt Knowles, niece Wendy; grandniece, Jasmine; nephews, Troy and Luke; great nephew, Jack.

A funeral and Military Honors will be conducted Monday, July 27, 2026, at 11:00am at the Clinton United Methodist Church, 36 Church Street, Clinton Maine. A celebration of life will be conducted immediately following the funeral ceremonies at Skowhegan American Legion Post 16 Located on Route 201 in Skowhegan Maine.

Burial will be at the Maine Veteran’s Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta Maine, on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, at 12:00pm.
