Obituary

AUGUSTA ? Marie Lucie Gravel Laverty, formerly of Portland and Norway, died July 1, 2002, at Glenridge Rehabilitation and Nursing Home in Augusta after a long illness. She was born in Wallagrass, Sept. 20, 1917, the daughter of Catherine Isabelle (Michaud) Gravel and Jean Baptiste Gravel. Mrs. Laverty was affectionately known as Lucille by family and friends. Besides being an accomplished seamstress, making clothes, quilts, dolls and teddy bears, she enjoyed other crafts, such as creating dollhouse furniture and baskets. She found peace in sketching and painting. She was predeceased by her husband, Clevis Owen Laverty; her parents; and five brothers, Leo, Alphie, Elbridge, Emil and Lewis. Lucille is survived by her two daughters, Joyce L. Miller of Dallas and Nancy E. Strubbe of East Winthrop; two sisters, Laurine Tomah of Houlton and Elsie Fiori of California; two brothers, Gerald Gravel of Houlton and John Gravel of Greenfield, Mass.; three granddaughters; one grandson; two great-grandsons; and many nieces and nephews. There will be no visiting hours. Interment will be at Woodlawn Cemetery in Westbrook. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Donations may be made in her name to the Shriners Hospital for Children, 51 Blossom St., Boston, Mass. 02114. Arrangements are in the care of Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home, Augusta.
