WINTHROP ? Maynard Woodbury Cooper, 76, died Saturday, May 18, 2002, at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta. He was born in Winthrop on Dec. 4, 1925, the son of F. Clyde and Marion (Woodbury) Cooper. Maynard was educated in Winthrop schools, and graduated from Winthrop High in 1945. He served in the American, European and Asiatic Pacific Theaters during World War II as a signalman in the Navy from 1943 to 1946. While he was in the service, he married Marjorie Mills in Winthrop on July 20, 1945. After the service, from 1946 to 1952, Maynard was employed in Winthrop as an electrician for Bonafide Mills and at Winthrop Woolen Mill in the card room. During that time, he also worked as a lineman for the Lewiston, Greene and Monmouth Telephone companies, and from 1948 to 1950, attended the Augusta School of Business. From 1952 to 1971, Maynard was employed by W.T. Grant Company in Gardiner as floorman and assistant manager and in Lewiston as department head and supervisor. From 1972 to the present, he was employed by the state of Maine Real Estate Commission in the Department of Business Regulations, where he worked as field representative and eventually real estate examiner until his retirement on Feb. 28, 1986. Before an ankle injury in 1970, Maynard's favorite activities centered on training and working with dogs in various capacities. He mostly trained dogs for bobcat and raccoon hunting, but enjoyed working with sled dogs and was very proud of his training of bloodhounds in Winthrop for the Sheriff's Department. More recently, he and Marjorie enjoyed their retirement by wintering in Florida and traveling throughout the country, oftentimes to Hamilton, Mont. to visit with their daughter, Janis. They enjoyed camping and boating in the summer, camping and snowmobiling in the winter, and were members of the Hillandalers Snowmobile Club in Winthrop. He is survived by his wife of nearly 57 years, Marjorie Cooper of Winthrop; his two sons, David Cooper, and his wife, Holly, of Monmouth, and Eric Cooper of Winthrop; his daughter, Janis Cooper, of Hamilton, Mont.; and his granddaughter, Jessie Cooper, of Bangor. Relatives and friends are invited to visit 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, May 21, at Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin St., Winthrop, where a funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 1 p.m. Burial will follow in Glenside Cemetery, Winthrop.
