MOUNT VERNON - Melvin C. Crocker, Jr., 57, of Murfreesboro, Tennessee and formerly of Mt. Vernon, Winthrop, and Readfield died unexpectedly on Friday, February 16th, 2007 in Murfreesboro. He was born in Augusta on April 26th, 1949, the son of Melvin and Ella (Rogers) Crocker. Melvin attended schools in Mt. Vernon, Winthrop, and Readfield. Soon after, he served with the United States Army in the Vietnam War where he received two Purple Hearts and the Silver Star for his heroic deeds after an enemy bomb had left him, and other comrades with him, partially disabled. After the service he was employed for a time as a mechanic with Town & Country in Newport, Rhode Island. He continued working as a school bus driver in Newport for the same company when it eventually became known as Laidlaw. After leaving Laidlaw he worked as a self employed laborer as of recent. Melvin liked traveling and spending time with his kids while fishing and camping together, but his passion was playing the guitar. His children will always remember how they also enjoyed his music as they all sang and danced together while he played. Melvin was predeceased by his father, Melvin Sr.; a son, Patrick Crocker; a daughter, Catherine Crocker; two brothers, Terry and Robert Crocker; and a sister, Sherry Crocker. He is survived by his mother, Ella Crocker, of Mt. Vernon; two daughters, Melvina Powell of Pennsylvania and Tammy Dubell of Florida; four brothers and a sister, Eugene Crocker & wife, Diane, of New Jersey, Richard Crocker & wife, Brenda, of China, Steven Crocker & wife, Elizabeth, of Gardiner, Dennis Crocker & wife, Diane, of Lewiston and Sandra Davidson of Gardiner; six grandchildren, Taylor, Jordan and Courtney Lane and Treyeawn, Tirinity and Troyis Etchison, Jr.; along with aunts, Esther Gray, Doreen Crocker and Maxine Bowler and uncles, Freeman Rogers, Francis Crocker and Herbert Crocker. Relatives and friends are invited to visit from 4:00 ? 6:00 pm on Thursday, Feb. 22 at Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin St., Winthrop where a celebration of his life will be held the same day, after the visitation, at 6:00 pm, with relative Dennis Crocker officiating. Committal prayers and interment with full military honors will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday in the chapel at the new Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta.
