VASSALBORO - Michael Stephen Hedio, 58, formerly of Brockton, Mass., died Monday, Dec. 1, 2003, at his home surrounded by family and friends after a long battle with cancer. Michael was born April 2, 1945, in Augusta the son of Ignacy Steve and June Theresa (Rancourt) Hedio. As a young man, Michael entered the U.S. Army in 1964. He fought for his country in Vietnam with the 1st Infantry Division, 121st Signal Battalion from May 6, 1966 to Nov. 27, 1967. He received numerous medals and unit citations before being honorably discharged in 1970. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Society of the 1st Infantry Division. Michael enjoyed spending time with his family. His favorite pastime was collecting baseball cards for his grandson John Michael. He also enjoyed watching football, baseball, boxing and playing cribbage with his veteran brothers. He was predeceased by his father Ignacy Steve Hedio of Brockton, Mass. He is survived by his mother June Theresa Hedio of Augusta; his son Michael Stephen Hedio Jr. of Vassalboro; a daughter Christine Theresa Hedio and her fiance Joseph Pavao of Pawtucket R.I.; his sister Sonia Kathryn Hedio of Augusta and the light of his eye, his grandson John Michael Hedio of Waterville. He is also survived by his companion of many years Brenda Libby of Vassalboro, several cousins, aunts and uncles. Michael will be sadly missed by his family and his many veteran brothers. There will be no visitation at this time. A committal service will be held at noon Friday, Dec. 5, in the chapel at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta. The Rev. C. Thomas Farrar will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Disabled American Veterans, Veterans Administration Hospital, Togus ME 04330 or the American Cancer Society, 1 Main St., Suite 300 Topsham, ME 04086.
