WINTHROP - Mildred E. 'Grandma' Schalk passed away from this life Saturday, Feb. 11, 2006, at Central Maine Medical Center, with her daughter, Donna, sitting beside her and holding her hand. She was born Dec. 15, 1913, in Cleveland, the daughter of Elmer and Laura (Boesiger) Johnson. She received her education in Fall River, Mass., before starting her working career in New York City. On June 25, 1938, she married Jay G. Schalk in Flushing, Queens, N.Y., to whom she remained married until his untimely death on their 31st anniversary in 1969. She resided in Englewood, N.J., and Hillsdale, N.J., until 1980, when she retired from Prentice Hall Publishers, and moved to Winthrop to be near her daughter and family. After settling into her new home, she held several volunteer jobs and took a part-time job at the Charles M. Bailey Public Library in Winthrop. At age 81, she fell and broke her hip. However, she refused to consider this to be anything other than an inconvenience and, after a rigorous rehabilitation, she returned to work at the library until she was 86. With assistance from her daughter, she was able to remain in her home until just a few days before her passing. Millie was predeceased by her parents; her husband; an infant daughter, June; her brother, Donald; and her good friend, Richard 'Dick' Kunemund. She was survived by her daughter and her husband, Donna and Alan Williams, of Vienna; a granddaughter and her husband, and a great-granddaughter, Autumn Day Wilbur, Christopher Wilbur and Hannah Moon Wilbur, whom she affectionately called 'Hannah Baby,' of Exeter, N.H.; a grandson and his fiance?, Oak Alan Williams and Michelle Caiazza, of Branford, Conn.; a granddaughter, Brook Christian Williams, of Portsmouth, N.H.; and Alan's family, of which Millie had become an integral part; her sister-in-law, Norma Johnson, of Lexington, Ky.; along with nieces and nephews, Glenn and Phyllis Johnson of Cranbury, N.J.; Wayne and Jacquie Johnson of Coralville, Iowa, and Lori, Charles, Amanda, and Steven Verrette of Lexington, Ky. Her family would like to especially thank Beverly Olson for her near daily lunchtime visits with Millie; Millie's neighbors, Paul and Peggy, for all their care and concern; Millie's friends at Ned's Place and the Rite-Aid Pharmacy in Winthrop; and all the wonderful nurses and doctors at CMMC who took such fantastic care of Millie. To those wishing to honor Millie's memory, please spend a few minutes, hours or days with a 'senior' friend or neighbor, or at your local elderly housing facility, lending someone your support, comfort and a few kind words.
