Obituary

Winthrop- Muriel B. "Jeanne" Graves, joined the Lord, surrounded by her loving family at Glenridge Rehab & Nursing Center in Augusta, Maine on April 21, 2024. She was born in Lexington, N.Y. on December 29, 1934, the daughter of George Ballou Sr. and Doris (Deyoe) Ballou. Jeanne attended school in Albany, N.Y. active as star athlete and head cheerleader, graduating in 1952. She met the love of her life, Thornton A. "Tony" Graves, a member of the U.S. Navy and were married November 7, 1953 in Lexington, N.Y. Jeanne and Tony moved to Connecticut, where she got a job with Raytheon. In 1959, the couple moved to Lewiston, Maine and finally Winthrop, Maine in 1968. She was a member of Alfred W. Maxwell Jr., American Legion Post 40 in Winthrop, volunteer member of Catholic Church Soup Kitchen and Methodist Church Tabitha's Closet. She enjoyed vacationing with family and friends at Sandy River Beach in Jonesport, Maine, trips to Kingston, Westkill and Albany, N.Y. to visit her family and loved the Las Vegas bright lights and shows. She loved her Boston Celtics and Red Sox, and never missed an airing of her tv favorite, Wheel of Fortune, and Days of Our Lives. Jeanne attended Winthrop Adult Education courses where she skilled herself in chair weaving, cake decorations, tole painting and crocheting. She was an avid gardener, superb trophy-winning bowler, excellent baker (winner best apple pie in town for years) and a devoted wife and mother. Jeanne also worked at Chicks Apple Orchard, H&R Block and Lake Mohonk Mountain House in N.Y. (which movie Dirty Dancing was based on). Everyone that knew her shared in her kind-heartedness, devotion to family and her heartwarming smile. She was predeceased by her parents, George Ballou Sr., and Doris, siblings, Shirley Dymond, Charles Ballou, George Ballou Jr., Bernice Engle, Betty Ballou, William Ballou, husband Thornton A. Graves and son Glenn A. Graves. She is survived by Darryl Robert, and Neil Andrew and his wife Nida. She also left behind three grandchildren, Jason, Chase and Camden, and a great granddaughter, Camille, two special nieces, Kathy and Jeannine. The nieces and nephews who will also miss Jeanne are Jeff, Richard, and Colleen. Jeanne had many friends, but very special ones included Gary and Elizabeth King, William and Dee White and Robert Thayer. There will be no public visiting hours. A ceremony will be held at the United Methodist Church on Main St., Winthrop, Maine on June 15th at 11:00 am. Following the ceremony will be a Celebration of Life at the American Legion Post#40. In lieu of flowers, those wishing may make contributions to the United Methodist Church 58 Main Street, Winthrop, Maine 04364.
